SLATE

The Deumer Cufflink Slate is an homage to our home, the Sauerland. Here slate quarrying has a long tradition. Especially in the 19^th and 20^th century slate played a major economical role due to rising demand and the connection of the region to the German railway system. In the Sauerland itself, the increased use of the material meant, that slate still dominates the landscape. Quarrying was done via explosion. Quarrying was done via explosion. The slate was roughly split into raw slabs on side. Further processing was done in mills, where the material was split into thinner pieces by hand. Depending on the intended future use, more work was done to treat the surface. Its dull black gleam makes it the arch-type of timeless modern design.
